Abstract:

During the academic year 2019-2020, the school started planning for its strategic plan for the next five years. Data was collected through extensive research  and  from various members of the school community. As a result, the strategic direction for student learning and achievement was decided upon (providing a student-centered education with an emphasis on student growth and empowerment), and the strategic goal for the Arabic language was also developed (Enhancing the Arabic language curriculum to become a modern, innovative and elaborate program that includes a range of non-academic curricular areas and activities).

With the approval of the strategic plan, the faculty members of the school were designated to design teams to work on each of the approved strategic goals. Hence the launch of the Arabic design team. The work team conducted  research and discussions to identify the need and then the developmental goal, including a SWOT analysis to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as areas of development and “possible threats” facing teaching and learning of the Arabic language. As a result of this work, the design team agreed that the developmental goal is to “create a stimulating learning environment that allows students to value their native Arabic as a language of communication, culture, and values.” From this goal emerged four procedural objectives, each of which was undertaken by a small team of teachers. Among these goals was the application of differentiation in the Arabic language classes.

Parallel to building a common understanding among teachers about differentiated instruction in Arabic language lessons, the school adopted two general goals during each of the years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 that contributed to highlighting differentiation and making it a common goal adopted by all members of the teaching staff in the school. The annual goals were as follows:

– 2021-2022: The focus was on the topic “Data” with the aim of emphasizing the areas of development in the educational process that the analysis and understanding of student data allows us.

– 2022-2023: Differentiation was adopted as a school goal, emanating from the data goal. Having developed this basic knowledge teachers would then use data to differentiate lessons to meet the individual needs of their students.
